WE ARE
Honua Ola is committed to the people and the environment of Hawaiʻi Island, and will continue to be a good neighbor and a good corporate citizen.
OUR IMPACT
100% Renewable Energy
Honua Ola will deliver clean renewable power to help Hawaiʻi meet its goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. The power generated will replace power from aging fossil fuel power plants, displacing 250,000 barrels of oil annually. Honua Ola will be fueled by locally-grown and harvested biomass, including, for example, eucalyptus and invasive albizia trees, and non-mulchable wood material. The eucalyptus will come from commercially managed forests which will be replanted in a sustainable, responsible way. B100 biodiesel (pure reprocessed waste cooking oil) will also be used.
Lower Rates for Residents & Businesses
Honua Ola is committed to producing electricity at a cost lower than fossil fuel sources, and more reliably (e.g., day and night) than other renewable energy sources. This reliability allows Hawaiʻi Island’s electrical grid to operate with less fossil fuel backup. The price of electricity delivered to the grid will not be tied to oil, which means a more stable price for ratepayers, especially those who can least afford the rising cost of electricity, such as seniors and the socioeconomically challenged.
Keeping Our Economy Strong
Honua Ola is increasing employment opportunities for the people of Hawaiʻi Island in construction, plant management and maintenance, specialty trades and ancillary services such as forestry, with approximately 380 jobs created during plant reconstruction and approximately 190 operations-related jobs once the plant is operational. Honua Ola will also increase the economic impact by revitalizing the forestry industry, including harvesting, hauling, processing, and replanting of trees all of which is expected to employ hundreds.
About $20 million that would leave Hawaiʻi for imported fossil fuels to generate the same amount of power will soon stay on Hawaiʻi Island and circulate in our economy.
Being A Good Neighbor
Honua Ola is making a long-term commitment to our neighbors by incorporating noise mitigating measures, scheduling deliveries only during daytime hours, and implementing state-of-the-art air quality and water usage controls.
