Approach

Honua Ola Bioenergy is committed to supporting the community and growing local talent.

Community support is critical to Honua Ola’s future, and it starts with our homegrown team. Many employees — from the workers who constructed the plant to the employees who now operate the facility — come from generations of families born and raised on Hawaiʻi Island.

Two employees stand outside in front of a large green and orange statue of a gear. They are both smiling and holding hands up in a shaka towards the camera.

Transparency

Honua Ola strives for transparency in communications about the project and wants to mitigate concerns about its potential impacts as expressed by community feedback.

“Feedforward” Input

Because the facility is near completion, communication with the community will focus on prompting “feedforward” input looking at specific aspects of the project and ways its operations can be improved.

Engagement

Honua Ola has and will continue to engage with community leaders, policymakers and residents. The project team’s existing relationships with many community leaders are a reliable source for ongoing feedback about the project.

Listening to and working with the community.

Honua Ola has and will continue to engage diverse and geographically widespread stakeholders, including:

  • State and county elected leaders
  • State and county agencies and officials
  • Island residents
  • Community leaders
  • Businesses
  • Labor unions
  • Educators
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Culturally based associations
